The Journey Home: Aracena Family Home Dedication

| Posted on 17 August, 2015

We often talk about what it means to grasp hold of the American Dream—a dream that boasts the opportunity for prosperity, success, upward mobility and homeownership. Founded on a principle that anything is possible, our great nation makes it possible for organizations like Habitat for Humanity to thrive and implement programs and services aimed at supporting persons with limited resources, but strong work ethic. Only in America, can a hardworking family from Latin America relocate to Norfolk, Virginia with the opportunity to build a brighter future and reap the benefits of homeownership.

Aracena Girls

Last week, volunteers and supporters of Habitat SHR witnessed this type of opportunity first hand at the Aracena family’s home dedication ceremony. Originally from the Dominican Republic, Gregorio Aracena, his wife Johanny, and their five children moved to Hampton Roads after living in the basement of a Bronx, New York apartment building. Habitat staff, volunteers, donors, community supporters, friends, and even new neighbors gathered in the front yard of the Aracena’s new home to congratulate this deserving family as new homeowners in the City of Norfolk. With the support of the generous donation from Bank of America, we were able to renovate a beautiful, historic property—turning it into a dream home for another partner family.

Home dedication ceremonies are especially important to Habitat. They speak to the heart of the organization and offer the ideal platform to demonstrate our mission. Further, our staff leaves each dedication reenergized—reminded of why we work so hard each and every day to eradicate poverty housing and ensure that all families willing to work hard are able to achieve the stability, economic empowerment, and sense of pride that homeownership offers.

Habitat SHR appreciates ongoing partnerships with Bank of America, Proctor & Gamble, the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore, and Chick-fil-A—all companies that help to make our home dedications special for our partner families. With several dedications planned for the remainder of the year, we look forward to sharing this special moment with more families in the weeks ahead.

Together, we are Rebuilding the American Dream.
