National Volunteer Month is ironically – or perhaps purposely – observed during the month of April. It’s a time when many reflect on the importance of sacrificing one’s time, which is at the core of volunteerism.
At Habitat SHR, we are fortunate to have an army of volunteers who selflessly donate their time, talents and resources to our mission to eradicate poverty housing throughout South Hampton Roads. In fact, our volunteers donate 85% of the construction labor on Habitat SHR builds and renovations. Last month, our volunteers had the opportunity to see the “fruits of their labor” at our home dedication on Cedar Road in Chesapeake. Nearly 163 volunteers donated 1,023.5 hours to help complete that property for one of our deserving families. During the dedication ceremony, the homeowner expressed gratitude – sharing that she will forever see the faces of Habitat volunteers each time she opens a cabinet or dines with her family in their new kitchen. This is what volunteerism is all about…making a difference and changing the course of someone’s life.
Habitat SHR’s volunteer program is fairly unique. We leverage the support of volunteers in ways that extend beyond the construction site. Not handy with a hammer? Check out our volunteers, like Ms. Betty, who serve in our ReStores. Because of her unwavering support and volunteer efforts in our Portsmouth ReStore, Ms. Betty recently received an award from our state support organization, Habitat VA. From tearing down sheetrock to helping reorganize our ReStores – everyone can contribute to Habitat’s efforts to provide affordable homeownership to low-income families in our community. (In other words…we’re an equal opportunity employer!)
As we celebrate National Volunteer Month, we encourage you to consider joining Ms. Betty and our other faithful volunteers to help us ensure that all families have access to a piece of the American Dream – homeownership. Habitat’s volunteer opportunities are perfect for the do-it-yourselfer looking for “on the job training” for a DIY home renovation project; or even the jetsetter looking for an excuse to trot the globe! In addition to contributions to Habitat for Humanity International’s (HFHI) stateside initiatives, volunteers are active in over 70 countries through active HFHI affiliates. Global Village trips provide volunteers with exposure to the local culture, while offering the opportunity to support Habitat’s mission abroad.

For more information on how you can get involved with Habitat SHR, visit http://shrhabitat.org/volunteer/. Be sure to ask for our volunteer coordinator, Sheila. She’s ready to put you to work!
We extend sincere appreciation to our team of volunteers. You are truly vital to Habitat SHR’s success and the lifeblood of our mission. Happy National Volunteer Month!
