Gear up for the new season with Do it Yourself tips that will make home improvement projects fun for everyone!
Often times renovating can be frustrating, costly and time consuming. To simplify your next DIY project, we’ve pulled suggestions, tips and tricks from our experienced construction and ReStore team that will help you personalize your home on a budget with ease.
Many people are transitioning from the standard, sometimes antiquated wallpaper to bold paint colors on their kitchen walls. But have you ever considered turning your wall into something more functional? Perhaps a giant chalkboard? Chalkboard walls are a fun and modern alternative that will spice up any dull kitchen decor. It’s helpful for keeping up with your children’s school schedule and social life; and perfect for a “honey-do list.” Here’s a five step approach to redesigning your kitchen in a more useful and creative way.
Step 1: To remove your wallpaper, mix hot water and fabric softener in a spray bottle. Gently saturate the paper and pull from the bottom corner upward. Once you’ve carefully removed your existing wallpaper and all traces of the leftover adhesive, you’re ready to start painting your chalkboard wall.
Step 2: Use painter’s tape to outline the area around the chalkboard.
Step 3: Outline the area with a brush/roller and apply the matte-black paint inside the outlined area. Apply 2-3 coats – depending on the brand of paint you purchased.
Step 4: Remove the painter’s tape and allow the paint to dry for at least 3 days.
Step 5: Once dried, use screws and wall anchors to place the drywall-mixing container to wall – this will serve as a holder for your chalk.
To erase, do not use a standard chalkboard eraser! Use a clean, damp cloth or paper towel. Only use light-colored chalk designed for use on chalkboards.
Congratulations! You’ve turned your dated kitchen into a funky fashion statement for less than $100! Be sure to check out any of our three ReStores to purchase these items at a discounted price!
Now go ahead…write on the walls, express your creativity and simply your daily tasks. Give the kids creative control, and keep them busy as you prepare meals. Remember, you can erase, and it’s back to new. Enjoy!
