Habitat for Humanity Launches Effort to Renovate 24 Homes in South Hampton Roads

In celebration of more than 25 years of service, Habitat SHR launched Rebuilding the American Dream (RAD) – an initiative to renovate 24 vacant properties. Bank of America helped to jumpstart the initiative with a $50,000 grant in addition to a donation of nine properties. Habitat SHR kicked-off the campaign on Friday, March 28 with a home dedication ceremony for the first Habitat homeowners to benefit from the RAD initiative. Volunteers and community partners gathered at the family’s new home on Cedar Road in Chesapeake, Va.

During the celebratory event, Wayne Lavender, Executive Director of Habitat SHR, shared progress on the RAD initiative and facilitated the home dedication ceremony for new homeowners – Michael Day, an Army reservist and Navy veteran, and his wife Danielle along with their four children.

Attendees embraced and congratulated the family, as they munched on breakfast donated by Chick-fil-A of Edinburgh Commons. Adding to the “American Dream” theme, RipTide of the Norfolk Tides joined the event to entertain the family’s “little ones” – as part of Habitat SHR’s new partnership with the team. The Tides will host a Habitat Day on August 16 to support RAD campaign efforts – one of several campaign events planned throughout the year.

Over the next nine months, Habitat SHR expects to raise $1.5 million to cover the costs to purchase and renovate homes for 24 families – at least six of which are committed to veteran or active-duty military families.

To date, we have raised a total of $158,500. We’re off to a great start, but we need your support to reach our goal!
