Meet the Green Family

Virgia Green was selected into the Habitat program in the spring of 2009. She had applied once before and was not selected, but she didn’t let that stop her from reapplying the following year.

Virgia a military wife and mother of three relocated to Virginia Beach in 1989 from California (military orders). A divorce would follow in 1994. Virgia continued to raise her kids as well as her now 17 year old grandson, Tyreek. She began caring for him when he was five months old, after his mother passed away. green family

Virgia has been living in an apartment since 1994. For the past 15 years Virgia has carefully balanced the ever increasing rent hikes and cost of living against the occasional annual raises. The last few years have been difficult with the increase of the cost of living and the continuing raises in rent and rare employment raises. Since 1990, Virgia has worked for the Virginia Beach Health Department as Administrative and Program Specialist. She has found stability in work and is excited to finally find that stability in her home life.

Virgia is matched with townhouse property in Virginia Beach. She and Tyreek are thrilled with the anticipation of moving into their OWN place. The homeownership classes have helped them recognize the differences between apartment living and homeownership. Virgia says the homeownership notebook will be handy for repairs they may face. Virgia is eager to have a place to call home. A place of their own; one where they can decorate, host family functions, have a larger space to cook and entertain. The grandkids are excited to visit and have more space to play. Tyreek is especially looking forward to having a place that he can call home and a place where he wants to invite his friends. They have earned a great deal of their "sweat equity" and are looking forward to earning the rest of it on their own place.
