Ford Street in Chesapeake

A Twelve Foot Wide Home

The Chesapeake Faith in Action partners broke ground on a 2 bedroom home on Ford Street in Chesapeake beginning on July 7, 2009. Construction lead, Ronnie Lehman and a team of 5 dedicated core volunteers laid the foundation on July 11. The wall raising ceremony was at 10am, Saturday July 18.
Habitat SHR Chesapeake building sponsor volunteers are charging ahead on the Ford Street property. The structure is up and sided. Participation from Chesapeake faith partners is high with volunteer companies installing the siding for materials only and labor and materials for insulation donated.
Join us for the dedication of this house Saturday, November 22, 2009 at 2pm.

Meet the Family

bynumShilonda Bynum considers herself very fortunate to be among the nine families selected by Habitat SHR for this year’s building “season.” In fact, Shilonda said that home ownership was a goal she set for herself this year, and she is very excited that her dream is coming true.

A native of Suffolk, Shilonda and her daughter, Skye, who is 11 years old, look forward to having their own house. As a Customer Relations associate for ASI, Shilonda wasn’t sure she could afford a home. However, after attending a first time homebuyer’s class given by the Suffolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority, Shilonda learned about Habitat and shortly thereafter submitted her application.

Shilonda has been matched with the 119 Ford Street property in Chesapeake. In the meantime, Shilonda has been attending Habitat’s Homebuyer Training every week and is a member of the Homebuyer’s Club sponsored by the Suffolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority.

Shilonda hopes that achieving her goal of home ownership will in turn allow her to meet other goals she has set for herself, such as finishing college. Her daughter Skye has a few "goals" in mind too – she has hopes that she will be able to get a dog! Shilonda said she is undecided, but if they do get a dog, Shilonda has one requirement – that the dog comes from a shelter and is already housetrained. It’s already very clear that Shilonda will take great care of and protect her new home!
