New Survey Helps to Streamline Application Process

By: Carla Holmes, Director of Family Services

It’s National Homeownership Month, and we’re on a mission to make affordable homeownership available to more families in South Hampton Roads! To make this possible, we are encouraging families to complete an application to become eligible for our housing program. Habitat SHR takes all factors into consideration – income, family size, financial history, and general need – to determine if the family is able to effectively maintain the mortgage. While we take pride in our extensive screening process, which helps to position our families for success as new homeowners, we recognize the existing application process is often intimidating to prospective homeowners. So, we re-evaluated the application and made a few updates…

Habitat SHR’s Family Services Department recently developed an improved, “fast track” pre-qualification survey to streamline and simplify the eligibility process. Applicants are able to complete the FREE survey as a first step. The survey consists of a short list of questions regarding family size, income, and current living situation. After meeting the minimum requirements, the applicant will be invited to complete the full application for homeownership.

Habitat SHR provides hardworking, low-income families with an opportunity to take part in the home buying process – the cornerstone of the American Dream. Because of the support we receive from our generous donors and faithful volunteers, we are able to sell affordable homes to deserving families at a zero percent interest, which alleviates the financial strain for our Habitat homeowners.

For more information about our housing programs or to complete the pre-qualification survey, visit Please contact Family Services at extension 208 for any additional questions or assistance with the application process.

Complete the survey or tell a friend it’s OPEN HOUSE at Habitat SHR!
