Reasons Why You Should Invest in Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads (Habitat SHR)

Habitat SHR is a non-profit organization that builds, renovates and sells houses (with a no-profit, no-interest 30-year mortgages) to low-income families. Relying on a unique partnership of individual volunteers, skilled craftsmen, churches, businesses, and prospective homeowners, Habitat SHR constructs and finances single-family homes. Mortgage payments are then used to construct additional housing throughout South Hampton Roads.

Purely and simply, Habitat’s program works. Despite skepticism about its no-profit, no-interest basis, more than 350,000 homes have been built worldwide since 1976; and over 166 houses have been built here in South Hampton Roads since 1988. Habitat’s record speaks for itself.

Habitat SHR does not use a band-aid approach. Its program is founded on people helping people in partnerships which cross ideological, political and theological lines. With widespread community support, Habitat perpetuates itself as mortgage payments are recycled into more housing. Habitat SHR offers a permanent solution to the housing crisis right here in the South Hampton Roads area.

Habitat SHR builds affordable and quality housing while keeping designs simple and efficient. Overhead costs are kept low by omitting volunteer labor from the price structure. Habitat’s work is both tangible and highly visible in the community.

By selling houses to people who in most cases were renters, Habitat SHR adds to the tax base of the area and wealth is created. Habitat promotes responsible citizenship, pride in the community and builds self-esteem and hope through homeownership.

If you would like to partner with Habitat SHR in making affordable homeownership available to low income families, please consider a cash donation today. If you donate ‘in-kind’ products, it will give you visibility and good public relations to the hundreds of volunteers who work on Habitat homes.

Building Houses Without Hammers

People power behind the scenes and at construction sites is important, but equally important as volunteer support is financial support to intensify Habitat’s work. Habitat SHR relies on cash donations to purchase land and building materials, but your support is also needed to cover administrative costs and the day-to-day expenses of running a non-profit organization. From the individual donor to the corporate sponsor, Habitat places a premium on each and every gift.

Before tools clang on a construction site, there is much else that needs to occur. Your donation can do so much to build a brighter future for families here in South Hampton Roads.

A donation of:

  • $25 will provide a porch light to light the way
  • $50 will provide a front door where guests enter
  • $75 will provide a cabinet where the cookie jar can be found
  • $100 will provide a window to watch the seasons change
  • $250 will provide insulation to help keep a family warm
  • $500 will provide lumber to build a child’s own bedroom
  • $1000 will provide bathroom and kitchen fixtures
  • $5000 will provide a roof over the heads of a family

Lots of Love

Habitat SHR relies upon the donations of no-cost or low-cost lots within South Hampton Roads to build new Habitat homes. Like other local builders, Habitat SHR is having an increasingly difficult time finding land for building. We have major corporate donors with interest in sponsoring Habitat homes in some of our cities where we just can’t afford to buy land. Donations of land to the “Lots of Love” campaign enables Habitat to build houses and allocate more financial resources to actual construction of new homes.

We need your help to identify and acquire land for our families. Donations of real estate to Habitat SHR are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law; however, please consult your tax advisor for specific tax advice.
