A Brush With Kindness

bwk logo"A Brush With Kindness" (ABWK) is a new program that our affiliate launched late last year. This unique program allows groups like yours - church, business and community groups to volunteer and financially support short term home-repair projects for low-income and elderly - homeowners, while providing an opportunity to make a lasting impact. The concept of the program is to connect the right people (those with a need and those who can help) and rejuvenate homes with...you got it...a brush of kindness.

This program will allow Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads to impact more families. Volunteers will assist with minor home repairs and painting. Each homeowner seeking assistance will be required to submit an application. Many of the projects will focus on senior citizens, disabled individuals, and single parent families. Click here for an application and please return to 900 Tidewater Drive, Norfolk, VA 23504.

The main difference in ABWK project and a regular Habitat build is they generally only last a few days. Low income homeowners who would like to enlist the help of A Brush With Kindness can submit an application. After the application is received it is reviewed by a committee to verify the need and that the applicant meets the criteria.

Sponsorships are a necessary facet of the Brush with Kindness program, and there are many opportunities to sponsor a project within South Hampton Roads and have an immediate impact on the recipient. Typically volunteer groups are asked to sponsor the cost of the home they work on. Partial sponsorships are available and can range from $1000 to $3000. Sponsorships provide the basic resources needed for the minor repairs or construction projects such as handicap ramps or grab bars. If you are part of a group that can donate time for a few days, or financial and material resources, please contact the Brush With Kindness Manager.

Recent Brush With Kindness Projects
These are a few of the recent projects that took only a day for completion. There have been a few that require two or three visits to complete, but the end result is a lasting impact for the recipient and often volunteers like yourself.

This homeowner recently became wheelchair bound due to an accident. The request was for assistance to make his bathroom handicap accessible. The before and after photographs are incredible and the homeowner is extremely pleased with the outcome.
