With National Homeownership Month in full swing, we are keeping the celebration going! Last week, we commemorated the spirit of the American Dream with Americana! Generous donors, volunteers, and board members gathered for the patriotic-themed cocktail mixer in support of Habitat SHR’s Rebuilding the American Dream (RAD) campaign.
The event took place at the Norfolk Tug Company’s newly renovated operations center – situated in a former pickle factory on the Elizabeth River. Guests dined on classic American cuisine favorites including mini hot dogs, macaroni and cheese, barbeque sliders, and apple pie; and old-fashioned Coca-Cola bottles and vintage crates added just the right touch.
Our fearless leader, Wayne Lavender, delivered a moving speech about the Homestead Act, one of the first government initiatives to promote homeownership after the Great Depression. He also shared thoughts on the benefits of homeownership as it relates to children and families – referencing the remarkable story of Jazz musician Louis Armstrong. As a troubled young boy, Armstrong was mentored by a caring family who welcomed him into their home. He left his burgeoning life of crime, became a world-renowned trumpet player, and never forgot the invaluable lessons he learned in the home of that generous family. Wayne reminded guests of the importance of homeownership and how a stable environment can completely change the course of someone’s life similar to “Satchmo.”
The funds raised, by approximately 50 guests in attendance, pushed our overall RAD total to $311,086. All proceeds from Americana! and any contributions received by July 31 will be matched, dollar for dollar, up to $75,000 – thanks to a generous anonymous donor.
