Why Walk When You Can Build?
Habitat SHR will be hosting its first annual Build-a-Thon October 8th - October 16th! Much like a Walk-a-Thon, the Habitat SHR Build-a-Thon asks volunteers to engage friends and family in making affordable housing a priority by sponsoring their volunteer hours for Habitat. Participants will sign up for half-day volunteer shifts and fundraise for their hours through a personal fundraising webpage. We have an affordable housing crisis in South Hampton Roads and you can make a difference. Lead the way!
Our website will be updated early August with more information. In the meantime, contact Katie Elder at build_a_thon@shrhabitat.org if you have questions and are interested. Click here for the flyer.

Our Apostle's Build is in Motion In an Apostle's Build, 12 churches (Apostles) partner to build a decent, affordable Habitat home for a qualified low income family.

1. The Gathering 7. Your Church
2. Coastal Community 8. Your Church
3. Galilee Church 9. Your Church
4. The Chapel of the Good Shepherd 10. Your Church
5. Naval Station Norfolk Chapel 11. Your Church
6. Your Church 12. Your Church
Your church may want to do something with Habitat, but may not know how to get started. Maybe you have done a smaller project and want to make a larger commitment to the community. Either way, this is a great opportunity to satisfy your mission outreach goals and make some new connections along the way. Each church is asked to support 1/12 of the build of a new home with funding, supplying volunteers, lunches and other support along the way. We have two churches committing dollars but not a full Apostleship. If you have a sister church or neighboring church that you’d like to partner with, then you can combine to form one of the 12.
This is a very exciting way to allow lots of folks to bless and be blessed by supporting Habitat's mission. If you’d like more information on how you can be a part of an Apostle’s build, or would definitely like to be a part, please contact us at 640-0590 or development@shrhabitat.org.

Meet the Redmond Family
redmond familyJackie and her daughter, Passion, currently live in Chesapeake. Jackie grew up on the Northern Neck. She and her siblings (three brothers and 1 sister) were raised by family, mainly the Aunts – they were separated as kids but have grown closer with time. Jackie has a dream of a stable environment for Passion. Jackie has worked for Smithfield Foods for the past eight years and now does document filing for the company.
She wants to be a homeowner and very much desires a place that she (and her daughter) can call home. Jackie had previously applied for the Habitat program when she lived in Newport News. At first she wasn’t accepted. Jackie did some research and over the next few years moved to South Hampton Roads and reapplied. She was selected this past year, spring 2010.
Jackie is currently pursuing her Bachelor’s from St. Leo’s College. Her goal is to graduate May 2011. Passion, age 13, attends Crestwood Middle and will be an eighth grader in the fall. It looks like 2011 will shape up to be a great year for this single mom and her daughter.

Sunday Build Day for our Friends at Temple Emanuel
Sunday, August 1, Habitat hosted its first Sunday build day in Red Mill Farm for 32 volunteers from Temple Emanuel. Rabbi Howard Mandell had approached Habitat several months ago expressing a desire to help with a Habitat build, and on Tuesday, July 27, more than 40 members attended an orientation at Temple Emanuel.
temple emanuel "We were delighted to have a Sunday build day to accommodate our Jewish friends," said Sherran Denkler, Habitat Director of Development. "This was our first time to have an all-Jewish congregation on a build site, and we hope this is just the beginning." Click here to view more photos of this house under construction.

Fundraising has begun for our first Youth Build!
A Youth Build is dedicated to promoting volunteerism by mobilizing young people ages 5 to 25 to fully fund and build a Habitat house. Students learn leadership and teamwork skills, and gain a better understanding of their community and poverty housing. All students are engaged in fundraising, education and advocacy activities, while those over 16 help with the actual house construction.
The next Youth Build "information" meeting will be September 28 at our office (900 Tidewater Drive) 6pm for all interested in participating in the Youth Build.
"We want to bring together youth from public/private (elementary, middle and high) schools, church youth groups, youth organizations, and the children of our Habitat families to build this Habitat house," said Denkler. "Of course we will need adults too, so please come to the meeting and learn how you can transform lives and communities."
For more information about the meeting or the Youth Build, call 640-0590 x219 or email development@shrhabitat.org.
